Bigg Boss 7: Reality TV virgins vs veterans

Will the 8 contestants with experience in reality TV shows rule the roost or will novices turn the tables?
Actor Salman Khan is the host for Bigg Boss 7
What’s up with flop Yash Raj heroines who started their Bollywood careers with Uday Chopra? Is the Bigg Boss house the only place where they find work? In 2009, Shamita Shetty made a beeline for the house and exited within a month ‘severely confused and disoriented’. Her excuse for voluntary eviction was her sister actress Shilpa Shetty’s decision to get married suddenly. Now it is Tanisha Mukerjee who enteredBigg Boss 7 (BB7) which started on Color’s on 15 September, with both mother actress Tanuja and sister actress Kajol saying there is no reason why Tanisha will find her stay difficult. Well, it is yet to be seen how long this reality TV virgin will be able to survive ‘heaven’ in BB7 given that this season is really going to be about how reality TV regulars navigate ‘heaven’ and ‘hell’—the two zones of the Bigg Boss house separated by jail bars. Eight out of 14 contestants have done some form or the other of reality TV whether it was cooking, dancing or getting married on TV and know how to work the system with tears, fights, lovey-dovey poses, and some skin show.
Ratan Rajput has had her own season swayamvar Ratan Ka Rishta in 2011 on the now defunct Imagine TV and mostly came across as a wimpy, simpering, Ms Goody Two Shoes in the first episode, a title that has two serious contenders already. Pratyusha Banerjee, who participated in Colors Jhalak Dikhhla Jaain 2012 was evicted early on account of ill health, meekly accepted Tanisha’s verdict of going to BB7 hell because obviously the Tanisha is not “itni selfless” to give up her place in heaven. Gauhar Khan, almost a veteran on the reality circuit (she has done Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa in 2009 and with her sister actressNigar Khan appeared in The Khan Sisters in 2011 on UTV Bindass, an Indianized version of Keeping up with the Kardashians) will also seriously contest for this title. A much milder, browbeaten version of her sister Nigar, who would have been the real contestant to watch out for, Gauhar is likely to lock horns early with Shilpa and Tanisha, both of whom share her side of heaven in the house.

In Nigar’s absence, Andy, who is a VJ and a choreographer and was seen previously in a cookery show Welcome-Baazi Mehmaan Nawaazi Ki in 2013 on Life OK, seems the obvious candidate to fill the ‘I am going to so screw you all slot’ previously reserved for the likes of Iman Siddique (season 5), Dolly Bindra (season 4), Kamaal R. Khan andPooja Misra (season 3). Of course, Siddique is not amused and on Twitter has said all comparisons between him and Andy are like comparing “Classy Crystal with tacky cut-glass”. Andy may already have an enemy in the house in the form of the very shapely Gauhar for Andy had locked horns with her sister Nigar in his previous show.
A close second for this ‘I am going to so screw you all’ slot could be Shilpa Agnihotri, who has doneNach Baliye in 2006, the one and only season Survivor India in 2012 on Star Plus and Welcome - Baazi Mehmaan-Nawaazi Ki previously. A hardened reality circuit regular, Shilpa was one of the most manipulative contestants and also among the worst behaved specially when thwarted and not treated according to her ‘celebrity status’ as shown on Survivor India. She will sweet talk, backbite and make alliances fast.
Speaking of Andy and Gauhar’s possible animosity-laden history, Shilpa and wrestler Sangram Singhtoo have history being co-contestants in Survivor India. Seriously whoever thought that watching Payal Rohatgi’s now on, now off boyfriend Sangram prance around in buff is going get hearts thudding needs to have their heads examined. Hopefully Sangram has entered the house with insights from Rohatgi on how to manage the gang and work the house from Rohatgi and we bet his first alliance will be Ratan Rajput across the jail bars.
The man with the puff, Kushal Tandon tried hard to get his two left feet working in Nach Baliye in 2012-13 but alas men with that hairstyle cannot dance (remember Dev Anand). Will he get by playing the charming ladies man or will he be bumped off early in the game? We are betting on the latter.
Among the other ‘virgins’, producer/director Rajat Rawail is likely to have serious image issues and will crack up fast; actor Arman Kohli we are told has a uncontrollable temper which he will try to keep under wraps (first rule of reality TV—let go of the temper, dude); actor Apoorva Agnihotri who we suspect is likely to play the peace-maker between his wife and all the enemies she makes or just be ignored by everyone; actress Kamya Punjabi who might just be another Iman in the making, but with much more finesse; and of course late Rajesh Khanna’s live in partner Anita Advani, who wants to clear the air but like us, seems to have no clue how she will do this. Rule no. 0 of any reality show: If she isn’t dishing any dirt, she isn’t surviving. The two actresses Hazel Keech and Eli Evram were much to lacklustre to comment on as was Salman Khan, who seemed to going easy on most contestants.
Bigg Boss 7, Colors, 9pm to 10pm daily.
