Lack of sleep can affect you mood, your concentration, your energy levels and even your eating patterns. Here’s why…
Experts opine
that if you are irritable, have trouble concentrating and sorting
information (like where you’ve kept your car keys), you may be
suffering from sleep deprivation.
But there is
also a difference in effect between having your sleep cut short at
either end and having your sleep interrupted during the night. sleep
deprivation due to interrupted sleep is more difficult to make up
than when your sleep is cut short. Your brain is not allowed to
perform the full sleep cycles needed for rejuvenation.
A study in
Canada showed that subjects sleep was disrupted several times in
night experienced ‘sustained impairment in alertness and
attention’. And it’s not just your brain power that’s
affected, your energy is low and your emotions are as fragile as the
little thing in your arms.
Scientific
studies also point to a link between sleep deprivation and obesity.
Lack of sleep decreases the production of leptin, a hormone that
makes people feel full after eating, and is thought also to increase
ghrelin, the hormone that triggers hunger. Without enough leptin and
with increased ghrelin, people continue to crave carbs even after
they’ve eaten leading to overeating.
Sleep
deprivation in children and adults has been shown to have extremely
negative effects, aminly because the growth hormone is released while
children sleep, which means enough sleep is a crucial part of normal
growth.
Sleep deprived
teenagers who had consumed more alcohol than the legal limit.
Doctor who is
dealing with hyperactive children, told in an interview that many
parents come to her who have told their children are suffering from
ADD(Attention Deficit Disorder), when in fact the real cause of their
behavior is too little sleep.
Getting proper
sleep is essential.
